Refill your Colibri lighter the correct way

Step 1

Colibri Premium butane is required to ensure optimum performance of your lighter. Modern lighters require the cleanest butane available at a pressure of 45 psi. Impurity of the gas can cause clogging of the burner valve or malfunctioning. Higher or lower pressure gas can cause the flame to either be too high or too low at any flame adjuster setting. Always use Colibri butane which is not only the cleanest lighter fuel but also formulated and pressurized for optimum performance of your Colibri lighter. Don't refill your lighter immediately after using it - allow time for the lighter to cool off to make filling easier. Do not smoke or refill or bleed the tank on a lighter around any open flames. Butane is heavier than air and tends to pool in low spots on the floor so keep this in mind when fueling or refilling a lighter.

Step 2

The flame height adjuster on the bottom of the lighter should be set to minimum by turning clockwise. There are 3 main types of Colibri flame adjusters: hand, thumbnail and screwdriver. The adjusting screw is a large screw with a standard slot head. Please DO NOT FORCE the adjusting screw. If it is hard to turn, this most likely means that the adjustment screw is already at the (-) or (+) limit. Please note that some lighters have a smaller, Phillips head screw. This screw is for removing the shell and dismantling the lighter and should not be touched.

Step 3

Holding the lighter away from your face, press down on the refilling valve with a screwdriver to let out the air inside until no hissing sound is heard. Air inside the fuel tank prevents butane gas from being injected into the tank and causes the lighter to malfunction. It sometimes is best for a "complete fill" to bleed the residual air and butane with the lighter in an upright position so the remaining liquid fuel is also expelled with the pressurized air. Just be careful if you do this as the expelled liquid is very cold if it touches your skin.

Step 4

ALWAYS refill the lighter in an upside down position to avoid injecting air into the lighter. While the can is inverted, press the stem of the refill can directly onto the refill valve on the bottom of the lighter. Keep them in a straight position and let the gas go into the lighter for about 5 seconds. Remove the refill can from the fill stem and hold the lighter upside down and press the fill valve with a small screwdriver very quickly to “burp” the remaining air out and confirm the lighter is full. A white liquid spray back from the valve indicates the lighter is full of LIQUID butane. Refill the lighter once more to make sure the fuel tank is “topped off”.

Step 5

Allow 3-4 minutes to let butane and lighter components reach room temperature. Properly refilled lighters get cold, and will need to warm up a bit before it will light and give a proper flame for use. If you’re in a hurry warm the lighter in your hand for about 30 seconds to warm the fuel in the lighter.

Step 6

If you’ve turned the adjuster all the way down, reset it to about halfway. Hold the lighter away from your face and body and ignite it carefully. If there is no flame, repeat the refilling process or turn the flame adjuster up or down to check ignition and reach the desired flame height. If you notice a release of gas or a loud hissing sound when turning the adjuster STOP and do not ignite the lighter. If the O-ring seals are worn as on a lighter that has not been used or fueled for a very long time, it may be dangerous. Return the lighter for service.
